Respect is incredibly important to people. It’s been a common topic in literature, music (prayers for Aretha Franklin’s family!) and even comedy. As business people we commonly expect and sometimes even demand respect. However, are we demonstrating these actions to others?
As I mentioned, we are business people but we are Christians too. Remember Matthew 7:12 aka “The Golden Rule”? If you are anticipating respect then you should be respecting others too. There should not be a priority list of “well, this person is getting me new business today so I’m going to disregard everyone else.”
People forget about the seeds they plant. My background is in mortgages and I treated every client the same. I’ve had clients with incredibly low loan amounts with commissions barely worth the time. However, these people referred more people to me due to my respect of their situation. We’re business people. Our job is to satisfy needs. Profits are a result of our excellent treatment of others. The money follows. You need to respect anyone and every because you have no idea what that relationship can become.
Be sure to note that this translates into your personal life too. The political season has started and everyone has different viewpoints for different reasons. Be sure to listen to one another and use logic. Do not get sucked into battles with disrespectful results. Political candidates are sinful too. They have flaws. Would you want everyone to scrutinize every mistake you’ve made while you’re applying for a new job? God forgives.
At the end of the day, remember why you want respect in business and make sure the action is reflective so we can all work together to Be More through Christ!
When have you treated others with respect and obtained value?
Thanks & God bless,
